FAQ

I have a soft spot for Cremellos, a considerably rare horse coloring of cream with no markings, blue eyes, and rosy skin. This mare is the first wild one that I've seen and she definitely looked out of place in the Wyoming wilderness. Not that I'm an expert but I've always thought of them as a little too sensitive for this world.

I had watched this mare and her foal from a distance until they headed to the side of the road parallel to my car. Her little one was wary of my presence and stayed close to his mom, making sure to nudge her from time to time to remind her there was a human in the car next to them. The wind was intense that day and compared to the other horses, she struggled to keep her eyes open. They dozed off together as I snapped some photos, and then I sat quietly with them for some time while they napped (still in my car). The only sound you could hear was the wind. It was peaceful.

This was October 18 of 2021. Sometime in the next few days they were captured in a roundup and lost their freedom. I'm not sure how to feel about this image. Part of me is happy to have documented their last few days living free as wild creatures. Another part of me is sad when I think about what this means for them. Still, another part of me is grateful to have experienced such a small and negligible moment in time that was also moving and beautiful.

I'm not sure what people see when they look at photographs, but this is the story behind this one. I'm glad I was there that day and their days in the wild will live on in these photographs. Most of all, I hope their future will be a kind one.
